Must-Know German Words & Sentences for Giving Birth in Germany

Giving birth in another language can feel overwhelming.

In Berlin you will often find a midwife or doctor who speak englishs, but this is not guaranteed.

I made this "cheat sheet" with useful words and phrases to support you/your partner communicating clearly.

Don't forget to reflect on a birth plan This will be very helpful to have clear statements about your wishes, preferences and boundaries for the birth. Print your birth plan, this list and your safety card, and pack these in your hospital bag. 👜

👩‍⚕️ Hospital Staff & Titles

Die Hebamme = Midwife
Der Arzt / Die Ärztin = Doctor (male/female)
Der Oberarzt / Die Oberärztin = Senior doctor (male/female)
Der Assistant Arzt / Die Assistant Ärztin = Doctor in training (male/female)
Der Anästhesist / Die Anästhesistin = Anesthesiologist (male/female)

📍 Labor & Contractions

Baby's health

Ich spüre mein Baby weniger/mehr als sonst. = I feel my baby('s movement) less/more than usual
Mein Bauchgefühl sagt mir, dass etwas nicht stimmt/ dass alles in Ordnung ist = My gut feeling tells me something is wrong / everything is fine

Contractions & dilation

Ich habe Wehen. = I have contractions.
Meine Wehen sind stark und regelmäßig. = My contractions are strong and regular.
Meine Wehen sind schwach und unregelmäßig. = My contractions are weak and irregular.
Die Wehen kommen alle 5 Minuten. = Contractions are coming every 5 minutes.
Wann soll ich in den Kreißsaal gehen? = When should I go to the delivery ward?
Ich spüre die Wehen im Rücken.= I feel the contractions in my back.
Ich spüre die Wehen vorne am Bauch.= I feel the contractions in the front of my belly.
Wie läuft die Geburt?= How is labour progressing?
Wie weit ist der Muttermund geöffnet?= How open is the cervix?
Der Gebärmutterhals ist 3 cm offen. = The cervix is 3 cm dilated.
Ich muss pressen. = I need to push.

Water bag

Die Fruchtblase ist geplatzt. = My water broke.
Das Fruchtwasser ist klar. = The liquid is clear.
Das Fruchtwasser ist grün/braun. = The liquid is green/brown.

Mucus plug / Bleeding

Ich glaube, ich habe den Schleimpfropf verloren.= I think I lost the mucus plug.
Ich sehe kein Blut.= I do not see blood.
Ich sehe Blut.= I see blood.
Nur ein Tropfen. = Just a drop.
- Wie bei meiner Periode. = Like during my period
- Es läuft kontinuierlich Blut. = The blood is flowing continuously.

🩺 Interventions

Die PDA (Periduralanästhesie) = Epidural
Der Kaiserschnitt = Cesarean section
Der Dammschnitt / Episiotomie = Episiotomy
Ein CTG = Fetal heart monitor
Eine Einleitung = Induction
Die Wehen einleiten = To induce labor
Saugglockengeburt = Vacuum extraction
Zangengeburt = Forceps birth

🧘 Pain Relief

Schmerzmittel = Painkiller
Die PDA (Periduralanästhesie) = Epidural
Opioide intravenös = intravenous opioids
Lachgas = Laughing gas
Ich möchte natürliche Methoden zur Schmerzlinderung. = I would like natural pain relief methods.

🧍 Birth Positions

Die Gebärposition = Birth position
Ich möchte in der Vierfüßlerposition gebären. = I want to give birth on all fours.
Ich möchte in Seitenlage gebären. = I want to give birth on my side.
Ich möchte vermeiden, auf dem Rücken zu pressen. = I would like to avoid pushing on my back
Ein Geburtsball / Gymnastikball = A birthing/exercise ball
Gebärhocker = Birthing stool
Seil / Haltegriff = Rope or handhold (for support during upright positions)

Ist es dringend? Wenn nicht, würde ich gerne kurz nachdenken.= Is it urgent? If not, I would like a moment to think.
Könnten Sie mir bitte den Grund für diese Intervention erklären?= Could you please explain the reason for this intervention?
Welche Alternativen gibt es?= What are the alternatives?
Könnten Sie mir bitte die Vorteile und Risiken erklären?= Could you please explain the benefits and risks?
Könnten wir warten und die Entscheidung später treffen?= Could we wait and decide later?
Ich stimme dieser Maßnahme nicht zu.= I do not consent to this procedure.
Ich möchte, dass ein Kollege / eine Kollegin zum Übersetzen kommt.= I would like one of your colleagues to come and translate.
Ich würde gerne die Hebamme / den Arzt / das Personal wechseln, da wir uns nicht gut verstehen.= I would like to change midwife / doctor / staff, as we do not understand each other well.
Ich möchte mit dem Oberarzt / der Oberärztin sprechen.= I would like to speak to the senior doctor / supervisor.
