The journey doesn't end when the baby arrives; in many ways... it is just the beginning!
I work as a postpartum doula in Berlin, and I see many families who live away from their primary support networks. This can make their "Fourth Trimester" feel like a real challenge. When no grandmother is around, no close-knit community... we lost this sense of "village" honouring and supporting the new mother.
This is where the support of someone such as a postpartum doula becomes essential.
But what exactly does postpartum support look like on a practical, day-to-day level?
Understanding the Role of a Postpartum Doula : Support Beyond Medical Care
It is important to distinguish between the different pillars of birth work. While a Hebamme (midwife) provides vital medical monitoring for both parent and baby, a postpartum doula offers complementary, non-medical care.
My role as a doula is centered on "mothering the mother." When everyone focuses on the baby... I ensure you feel heard as well! I support you so that you can eat, get a shower, get some rest... just the basics, but this is vitally important for you to recover and bond with your baby,
What a Postpartum Session With Me As Your Doula Includes
The care I provide will really depend on your personal situation, based on your unique emotional and physical needs.
A typical three-hour session might include:
Emotional Processing: A safe, non-judgmental space to revisit your birth story and navigate the complex emotions that arise in the weeks following the transformation of birth and becoming a parent. I am sensitive to issues related to emotional challenges in the postpartum and can support you by providing a listening ear. (I Am Crying All the Time! Is it Baby Blues or Postpartum Depression? 🌧)
After a Traumatic Birth. 💔 The Issue is Systemic. You are NOT the Issue.❤️
Newborn Care & Confidence: Practical guidance on bathing, soothing, diaper changes, and initiation into baby-wearing (with a scarf carrier)
Feeding Guidance: Support and troubleshooting for breastfeeding or bottle feeding to help establish a comfortable routine.
Household Harmony: Light help to keep the home tidy. This can include nursery organization, laundry, vacuuming, or preparing nourishing meals to fuel your recovery.
Supportive and Calm Presence: Sometimes, the greatest gift is simply a calm, trained professional taking the baby for a walk so you can sleep, shower, or simply be for a moment.
Investing in Your Recovery
Prioritizing postpartum care is an investment in the long-term wellbeing of the entire family.
Standard Session: 140€ for a 3-hour session.
Location: Serving families across Berlin (a 10-20€ travel surcharge may apply depending on the area).
If you are looking for a supportive, reassuring presence to help you navigate these changes with confidence, reach out to discuss how we can tailor a support plan to your needs.
You can book your sessions in adavance, even before birth. Don't hesitate to get in touch via a free call.
Let’s ensure you are cared for while you care for your new arrival.
